Ceramics
Beginning and Intermediate Ceramics
In a small, well-equipped ceramics studio, we study the properties of clay through demonstrations, critiques, and individual instruction.
Students work in both functional and sculptural forms. The course includes building by hand, throwing on the wheel, clay decoration, and glaze mixing.
Advanced Ceramics
The students begin the course by following the Japanese potter’s tradition of throwing many pots off one large mass. Students are also taught the color inlay practice of the Japanese neriage style.
Discovering a personal style is encouraged and learning to assess one’s own work is important. The goal of each student’s end-of-year project is to blend the traditions of ceramics with the freshness
of contemporary style.
