Music
(Starred music courses receive half credit.)
Music Theory I*
This course, for those with little or no knowledge of music, covers
sight-reading, ear training, notation, rhythm, basic part writing, and
rudimentary analysis. Class members must join either chorus or orchestra.
Music Theory II* and III*
Advanced courses in musical analysis that includes the study of voice leading, harmonization, figured bass, modulation, and other composition techniques. Both courses place heavy emphasis on ear training, and class members must join either chorus or orchestra. The goal is to take the Music Theory AP at the end of the year.
Composition*
A private tutorial for advanced music students, with opportunities for
performances of their works at concerts and assemblies.
Jazz Theory I *
An introduction to basic concepts of melody, harmony, and rhythm with a strong emphasis on ear training and improvisation. Students learn to analyze simple tunes and to prepare solos. Some proficiency on an instrument is essential.
Jazz Theory II*
Students arrange and compose pieces for the Commonwealth Jazz Ensemble.
Jazz Ensemble
A small group including wind instruments, strings, and a rhythm section prepares a spring concert that often includes material composed and arranged by the students and the instructor. The ensemble makes possible the study of improvisation in a relaxed atmosphere. Jazz Theory students must be enrolled in Jazz Ensemble, which meets Tuesdays after school.
Chorus

orchestra and student soloists, occasionally with a professional orchestra or soloists. No audition necessary.
Chorale

Orchestra
An ensemble that performs orchestral works chosen specifically for the instruments we have, often collaborating with the chorus.
Chamber Music
Small instrumental or vocal duets, trios, and quartets are coached on a weekly basis. Participants must be members of the chorus or orchestra.
