Outside
In tells the dramatic story of Dr.
Katherine “Kasia” Clark, a family doctor whose diagnosis of advanced ovarian
cancer at age 42 takes her on an emotional and physical rollercoaster
ride. Narrated by Kasia, “Outside
In" represents her unique point of
view as a doctor-turned-patient. Alternately subject and documenter, Kasia
explores her treatment choices and their effects on her life over eight years,
during which she redefines herself and rethinks her life. From a missed diagnosis to a stage 3C
diagnosis, through two surgeries and a radical Phase II clinical trial,
followed by a long remission and then recurrence, requiring more surgery and
chemotherapy, Kasia pushes into an unknown future. Outside In is not an
evidence-based
film delineating and measuring the pros, cons, and side effects
of medical and surgical tests and treatments. It is a film about life
choices. About the coupling of medicine and personal drive; about the
ways one person chooses to reclaim her body and her identity – extreme
athletics and nutritional regimens, psychotherapy, relationship
building,
filmmaking, and violin studies with masters. It is one person’s total
encounter
with a killer disease and the profound questions it raises – How can I
save
myself? Who can I trust to help
me? Who am I now? How do I choose to live? And, How will I decide to
die?
