Welcome to Commonwealth School's application process! Commonwealth uses an online application system called Ravenna. To apply, please register with Ravenna and create a basic profile. Then, select 'Commonwealth School' from the School Directory to begin our process.
The application fee is $60 for U.S. residents and $120 for international applicants. If the application fee presents a challenge to your family, please contact our office to request a fee waiver and we will gladly provide one.
If you indicate in the application form that you wish to receive information on financial aid, we will send you instructions by the end of the calendar year. Both admissions and financial aid decisions will be released on March 10, 2020.
During this 60- to 90-minute visit, prospective students and families meet with a member of the admissions committee and see the school. Deadline: February 1, 2020
For the first part of our season (appointments booked for October 7 through November 15), we offered families the opportunity to interview before applying. Now that we are booked through November 15, we ask that you submit our brief, online application before scheduling an interview. Once we receive this, we will reach out to you to arrange this visit. Our schedule is now open through December 19.*
*We kindly request that international students submit an application and either SSAT or TOEFL scores before scheduling an interview.
Following the interview applicants return to Commonwealth for a full-day visit. A student host will accompany you to classes, all-school meeting, and lunch. You will also write two essays during your visit. Deadline: February 1, 2020
If you are an out-of-state or international applicant and your travel plans necessitate a same-day interview and full-day visit, kindly let us know when we reach out to you about scheduling.
Please note that we always require international applicants to submit SSAT and/or TOEFL scores before scheduling a day visit.
All applicants must take either the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Our SSAT code is 2542 and our ISEE code is 220222. Deadline: February 1, 2020
SSAT test dates for 2019–20 are:
|October 19, 2019|
|November 16, 2019|
|December 14, 2019|
|January 4, 2020*
*last possible date to receive an admission
decision by March 10
Commonwealth School will serve as an SSAT Test Center for the December 14, 2019 and January 4, 2020 test dates. You can register to take the SSAT at Commonwealth here.
If the SSAT registration fee poses a financial challenge for your family, please contact us for a fee waiver.
Unless they attend a school in which English is the primary language of instruction, international students should plan to take the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as well.
We also welcome (but do not require) students who have taken the Character Skills Snapshot, an online character development assessment through SSAT, to share their reports with us.
Commonwealth requires three recommendations from currents teachers: one from an English teacher, one from a math teacher, and one from your head of school, principal, guidance counselor, or placement counselor. Commonwealth accepts recommendations through Ravenna's online recommendation system. Directions for online recommendations can be found in the application portal. If you have questions, please contact the admissions office at 617-266-7527 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline: February 1, 2020
We ask applicants to complete a transcript release form, which they will turn in to their current school. Please note that as this is a shared form amongst the Boston area institutions that use the Ravenna platform, it is only necessary to submit the form to your school once; simply check off all of the Ravenna schools to which you plan to apply.
School administrators should either upload transcripts to Ravenna or send them directly to Commonwealth by email (email@example.com) or mail (151 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02116). Deadline: February 1, 2020
Please do not hesitate to contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 617-266-7525 if you have questions or if we can be of assistance.
