Apply

Welcome to Commonwealth School's online application process.

The application fee is $60 for U.S. residents and $120 for international applicants. If the application fee presents a challenge to your family, please contact our office to request a fee waiver.

Commonwealth uses an online application system called Ravenna. To apply, please register with Ravenna and create a basic profile. Then, select 'Commonwealth School' from the School Directory to begin our process.

If you indicate in the application form that you wish to receive information on financial aid, we will send you instructions by the end of the calendar year. Both admissions and financial aid decisions will be mailed on March 9, 2019.

Additional Steps

Interview

During this 60- to 90-minute visit, prospective students and families meet with a member of the admissions committee and see the school. Deadline: February 1, 2019

We will begin scheduling interviews August 31, 2018, and we will host our first appointments on October 1. For the first part of our season, we offer families the opportunity to interview before applying. However, after November 9, we ask students to submit our brief, online application before scheduling an interview.*

*We kindly request that international students submit an application and either SSAT or TOEFL scores before scheduling an interview.

Visit

Following your interview you will return to Commonwealth for a full-day visit during which a student host will accompany you to classes, all-school meeting, and lunch. You will also write two essays during your visit. Deadline: February 1, 2019

If you are an out-of-state or international applicant and your travel plans necessitate a same-day interview and full-day visit, kindly let us know when we reach out to you about scheduling.

Please note that we always require international applicants to submit SSAT and/or TOEFL scores before scheduling a day visit.

Test

All applicants must take either the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Our SSAT code is 2542 and our ISEE code is 220222. Deadline: February 1, 2019

SSAT test dates for 2018–19 are:

October 13, 2018
November 10, 2018
December 8, 2018
January 5, 2019*

*last possible date to receive an admission
decision by March 10

Unless they attend a school in which English is the primary language of instruction, international students should plan to take the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as well.

This season we also welcome (but do not require) students who have taken the Character Skills Snapshot, an online character development assessment through SSAT, to share their reports with us.

Submit Recommendations

Commonwealth requires three recommendations from currents teachers: one from an English teacher, one from a math teacher, and one from your head of school, principal, guidance counselor, or placement counselor. Commonwealth will accept recommendations through Ravenna's online recommendation system. Directions for online recommendations can be found in the application portal. If you have questions, please contact Lindsay Ewing, Assistant Director of Admissions, at 617-266-7527 x239 or lewing@commschool.org. Deadline: February 1, 2019

Request Transcript

Applicants are required to download and fill out a transcript release form, which they will turn in to their current school. Please note that as this is a shared form amongst the Boston area institutions that use the Ravenna platform, it is only necessary to submit the form to your school once--simply check off all of the Ravenna schools to which you plan to apply.

School administrators should either upload transcripts to Ravenna or send them directly to Commonwealth by email (admissions@commschool.org) or mail (151 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02116). Deadline: February 1, 2019

Please do not hesitate to contact us by email at admissions@commschool.org or by phone at 617-266-7525 if you have questions or if we can be of assistance.
