Welcome to Commonwealth School's online application process.

While our application deadline for fall of 2017 entry has passed, we may consider additional applicants on a case-by-case basis. Please contact our admissions team to discuss your situation.

The application fee is $50 for U.S. residents and $100 for international applicants. We offer a limited number of fee waivers; to request one, please contact our office.

Commonwealth accepts two forms of online application. Please complete ONLY ONE application.

1. Commonwealth's online application: complete your application through our online portal. Please see the Additional Materials section below for information on the submission of recommendations and transcripts.

2. SSAT Standard Application Online (SAO): students applying to multiple schools may wish to apply through the SSAT SAO.

Next Steps

After you submit your application form and fee, we will call you to schedule an interview and day visit. The interview is a chance for you and your parent(s) or guardian to come to Commonwealth to speak with a member of the admissions staff and take a tour of the school. This visit lasts about an hour and a half. Following your interview you will return to Commonwealth for a full-day visit during which a student host will accompany you to various classes, community meetings, and lunch. You will also write two essays during your day visit. We do not require any kind of follow-up application.

Every applicant must also take the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) and submit those scores to Commonwealth. Our SSAT code is 2542. Test dates for 2016–17 are:

  • October 15, 2016
  • November 12, 2016
  • December 10, 2016
  • January 7, 2017

In order to receive an admission decision by March 10, you should plan to take the SSAT no later than the January 7, 2017 test date.

We also accept the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Our ISEE code is 220222.

Additional Materials

In order to evaluate your application, the Admissions Committee must receive your academic transcript and three recommendations from currents teachers: one from an English or social studies teacher, one from a math or science teacher, and one from your head of school, principal, guidance counselor, or placement counselor. This year, Commonwealth will accept recommendations through an online recommendation system accessible through your online account. Directions for online recommendations can be found on the application portal. If you have questions, please contact Lindsay Ewing, Admissions Assistant, at 617-266-7527 x239 or

Transcripts: Applicants are required to download and fill out a transcript release form, which they will turn in to their current school. School administrators should send transcripts directly to Commonwealth by email ( or mail (151 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02116).

The deadline for all recommendations, transcripts, and standardized test scores is February 1, 2017.

If you indicate in the application form that you wish to receive information on financial aid, we will send you instructions by the end of the calendar year. Both admissions and financial aid decisions will be mailed on March 10, 2017.

Please do not hesitate to contact us by email at or by phone at 617-266-7525 if you have questions or if we can be of assistance.
