Performing Arts

Someone practicing the “Ages of Man” monologue in an empty classroom. Guitarists riffing in the hallway. A Chorale rehearsal rising up from the lunchroom. Every day, in myriad and magnificent ways, the sounds of the performing arts fill our halls and our senses at Commonwealth.

Music

Many students come to Commonwealth already accomplished musicians—but experience is not required to participate in our performing arts ensembles. Our faculty guide budding musicians from their first exposure to a new instrument to composing and conducting seminars. Our musicians are often recognized as All State and All District performers, among other achievements. Student performances, whether an intimate Bach cantata from our Chamber Music ensemble, a rollicking Charlie Parker piece from our jazz band, or a cathedral-filling concert featuring our full Orchestra and Chorus, are a true delight.

Theater

Acting is both an academic discipline and extracurricular activity at Commonwealth. Students can take introductory and advanced acting courses for credit, growing their talents as performers, public speakers, and even playwrights. Two annual productions (performed at the regal Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge!) provide opportunities to explore both the performing and technical aspects of theater, while our annual Shakespeare competition, Acting Assembly, and other student-led performances place students in front of an exuberant Commonwealth audience.
