Virtual Commonwealth Student Life and Extracurriculars

Maintaining Connections

Even during this era of social distancing, there are many ways of fostering community, and our students have been exceedingly proactive in seeking them out, planning virtual events and sending suggestions directly to the community. When school is in session, Virtual Commonwealth’s students can use Virtual Commonwealth rooms to spend time with each other and hold meetings for clubs and other extracurricular activities. Finally, our Commonwealth Google accounts enable any student to host a Google Hangout, which make virtual meetings easy to schedule and join.

Advising

Commonwealth’s distinctive advising program—pairing each student with a dedicated faculty mentor for frequent and personalized academic and extracurricular guidance—has been critical to the success of Virtual Commonwealth. Advisors connect with students and families regularly and are available to counsel them through this challenging period. Students are also encouraged to proactively reach out to their advisors or other adults to support their social, emotional, and academic needs—or simply stay connected.

Student Clubs

Clubs and other student groups can arrange to hold virtual meetings during the Virtual Commonwealth day (during lunch or after school, as usual) via Zoom in order to maintain social connections with each other and, as possible, to continue their work remotely. These meetings should be open and inclusive, just as they are on campus.

Student groups that have indicated an interest in meeting remotely include:

  • Chess Club
  • COMMUN (Thursday)
  • COMMunity
  • Debate Team
  • DnD
  • Environmental Committee
  • Evil Genius Club
  • Feminism (Monday)
  • GSA (Friday)
  • Math Team
  • Model UN
  • Model Congress
  • Peer Advocates
  • Philosophy
  • Politics
  • Prom
  • Rap Club
  • Robotics
  • We Discuss
  • Yearbook (Wednesday)

Should the campus close for remote learning, all on-campus activities will be cancelled or postponed. Those activities conducive to the virtual format will continue to meet.

Please see our Fall 2020 page for further guidance and updates regarding athletics, arts, and other extracurricular considerations.
