Dear Commonwealth Community,
I am writing to introduce myself in advance of what I know will be many opportunities to connect in person. In the age of COVID, "in person" feels newly precious.
As Commonwealth's incoming Head, I'm grateful to be inheriting the fruits of Bill Wharton's skillful leadership and that of the school's talented faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees.
Commonwealth has certainly evolved since I graduated in 1981, though much remains recognizable to me: the full-throated embrace of learning and excellence, the passionate faculty, and the vibrant sense of community. I am eager to preserve what's most distinctive and special about Commonwealth while steering us towards an even stronger future. Part of that future will be an embrace of the richness of diversity work; throughout my interview process, I was moved to see how many different members of the Commonwealth community were excited to walk down that path.
I was impressed with so many of the people I met through the interview process: parents, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni. But I was most delighted by the time I was able to spend with students. They were lively, self-assured, authentic—clearly used to engaging in thoughtful discussion and debate.
I look forward to more of the same when I arrive in July. I know there will be many opportunities to learn from you about the Commonwealth of today and to hear your hopes for Commonwealth's future.
