Commonwealth Senior Named National Merit Scholarship Winner

An exciting year for Linda He ’23, Commonwealth senior and recently named Regeneron Scholar, continues, as she has been selected as a 2023 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winner.

Earlier this month, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced this year’s spate of winners, which include about 7,250 students chosen from a group of more than 15,000 Finalists.

Twenty-two of this year's forty-two Commonwealth seniors have been recognized in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program, either as Semifinalists or Commended students. All six seniors named Semifinalists, including Linda, went on to become Finalists as well.

This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began unfolding in the autumn of 2022, as students who took the 2021 PSAT became eligible for consideration. Among all students who entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000 were named Semifinalists, designated on a representational basis for each state. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a Semifinalist had to become a Finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance. The competition will continue through June of this year, as colleges and universities enrolling National Merit Scholarship Finalists award their own school-sponsored awards.
