Commonwealth Seniors Recognized in 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program

Commonwealth School is pleased to share outcomes from the 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program to date.

Twenty-two of this year's forty-two seniors have been recognized in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program, either as Semifinalists or Commended students.

Representing the state of Massachusetts, the six Semifinalists include:

  • Will Du ’23, of Canton (child of Charlie Du and Li Xu)
  • Moe Frumkin ’23, of Brookline (child of Peter Frumkin and Sharon Grimberg)
  • Linda He ’23, of Salisbury (child of Fangli He and Meijun Xu)
  • Ella McKee ’23, of Westwood (child of William McKee and Margaret Reynolds)
  • Victor Na ’23, of Quincy (child of Dr. Jishen Na and Song Liu)
  • David Wang ’23, of Lexington (child of Zhonghua Wang and Shujun Li)

These National Merit Semifinalists join a nationwide pool of approximately 16,000 students, representing less than 1% of graduating high school seniors in the U.S. and including the highest-scoring entrants in each state. 

An additional sixteen Commonwealth seniors received notice of the National Merit Letter of Commendation. These are students whose PSAT scores put them in the top 3% of test takers nationally:

  • Charles Brainin ’23, of Brookline (child of Robert Brainin and Nicola Kean)

  • Alex Choi ’23, of Bedford (child of Dr. Tony Choi and Dr. Melissa Choi)
  • Ayla Denenberg ’23, of Newton (child of Dr. Lawrence Denenberg and Dr. Rachael Rosner)
  • Romen Der Manuelian ’23, of Needham (child of Matthew Der Manuelian and Dr. Anahit Atayan)
  • Eliza Fried ’23, of Auburndale (child of C. Gregory Fried and Christina Hardway)
  • Parth Garg ’23, of Boston (child of Dr. Ashish Garg and Ambika Garg)
  • Nathan Leung ’23, of Boston (child of Chris Yau)
  • Jason Li ’23, of Sharon (child of Yulong Li and Minjia Zhang)
  • Peter Luo ’23, of Boston (child of Chuankui Luo and Hongxia Kou)
  • Daniel Martin ’23, of Arlington (child of Matthew Martin and Laura Johnston)
  • Ben O’Donnell ’23, of Melrose (child of Michael O’Donnell and Katharyn Hok)
  • Kian Park ’23, of Cambridge (child of Youngjoon Park and Dr. Ilyon Woo)
  • Henry Stepanyants ’23, of Hingham (child of Dr. Armen Stepanyants and Kirsten Banks)
  • Meredith Teague ’23, of Lexington (child of Charles Teague and Megan Teague)

Approximately 1.5 million juniors entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test®. Finalists will be announced in February of 2023, and National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July.
