Community Giving Report 2019–2020

Commonwealth aims to be a school of uncommon opportunity, educating young people from diverse backgrounds to become knowledgeable, thoughtful, and creative adults, capable of careful analysis, fruitful cooperation, responsible leadership, and deep commitment. Through its steadfast support, particularly during this year of unprecedented challenge, our dedicated and generous community continues to ensure we can fulfill this mission and provide such opportunities to our students, now and in the future.

March 2020 was one of the most unsettling months I can remember. We were deeply concerned about students’ health and safety and the prospect of moving to virtual schooling. In addition, we were worried about the financial effects of the pandemic on Commonwealth. A group of trustees engaged in lively discussions about a possible application for a PPP loan from the federal government. Ultimately we decided that relying on our own community was the right thing to do.

Each year, The Commonwealth Fund supports twelve percent of the school’s annual operating budget. Parents, alumni/ae, faculty and staff, and friends pledge their support and make it possible for our small school to thrive. We began the month in pace and on track to reach our fundraising goal for the year, but by mid-March everything changed. We were unsure of how the spring would unfold, and the funds left to raise were critical to our ability to run Virtual Commonwealth and to move confidently toward the second summer of our Dive In program. As was the case everywhere, April was quiet. But then in mid-May we hosted our fifth annual Giving Day, in honor of Commonwealth teachers, past and present. As the school year came to a close and we celebrated the Class of 2020 with Commonwealth’s sixtieth—and first ever virtual—graduation, our decision to rely on our community proved to be the right one. Despite the turmoil of the final semester, we not only reached, but, beyond all expectations, exceeded our goal for the year.

Our worry turned quickly to gratitude for all who believe in our work. Our gratitude was all the greater as, in June, young alumni/ae and students bravely called out the need for significant change if Commonwealth is to live up to its commitment to diversity and equity. The ongoing support of our community, in all the forms it can take, continues to be vital as we struggle through the pandemic and strive to respond meaningfully to the calls for change. Thank you.

Bill Wharton
Headmaster

A Message from Board of Trustees Chair
Therese Hendricks P'05, '07

A work in progress—that is how I have always thought of Commonwealth School. It is why I wanted it for my children and why I remain involved nearly twenty years later. And that moniker is even truer now. We were hit with a virus that forced us to migrate from our cherished in-person engagement to remote learning. Many senior faculty retired in the last five years, with new faculty bringing new energy and direction. At the end of this school year, Bill Wharton will retire after 36 years at the school and 21 as Head. The search for Commonwealth’s next Head creates opportunity to carefully consider our strengths and needs at this unusual and critical time. The Board of Trustees is undergoing its own reflection and renewal, bringing in new alumni/ae and parents to face the challenges ahead. And our alumni/ae and students are encouraging us to recalculate the Commonwealth experience and what it means to be a diverse community.

Throughout all of this, you, our supporters, have been steadfast and generous. Without you, we cannot exist. We hope you stay with us and help us continue this work in progress.

Therese Hendricks P’05, ’07
Chair, Board of Trustees

The Student Experience

Over the past six months, our students have exhibited courage, patience, fortitude, and humility, adapting to the extraordinary and ever-changing circumstances they found themselves in. The student stories below, we hope, offer a glimpse into their world.

Senior Speech: Aunnesha Bhowmick '20

Now among our newest alumnae, Aunnesha Bhowmick reflected on de-stressing in the ceramics classroom, post-show dinners in the city, and the lessons (and even joy) in failing in her senior speech, delivered in the spring of 2020.

"Let's Do This": Commonwealth Students Give Back in Times of Crisis

From the earliest days of the coronavirus pandemic, Commonwealth School students took action. Fundraising, sewing masks, collecting donations: if there was a way to help, students jumped at the chance. Here are just a few of their stories...

The Power of a Vision: a Campaign for Commonwealth

The Power of a Vision: a Campaign for Commonwealth is an investment in the future. By providing endowed support for financial aid and faculty compensation, and by securing our Boston home through support for much-needed renovations, this campaign will ensure Mr. Merrill's vision for the school carries forward for years to come. We greatly appreciate the alumni/ae, parents, and friends who made gifts to the Campaign in the 2019-2020 fiscal year.
